What is PREVENTION IN PARTNERSHIP? PREVENTION takes all of us. What are some examples of PRIMARY PREVENTION? PREVENTION takes all of us. It occurs in New Hampshire when everyone comes together in PARTNERSHIP to build positive futures for children. At the New Hampshire Children’s Trust, we know that strong communities are built on solid foundations. When the underlying causes that lead to health and social inequities are addressed, families have the resources they need, when they need them. PRIMARY PREVENTION is when we use upstream thinking—before challenges occur—to identify and employ strategies that prevent harm from ever occurring so all NH children can thrive. In fact, the prevention of harm involves the intentional creation of happy, healthy environments and systems, where children exist surrounded by protective factors and can develop both physically and emotionally. That means we must also work to help build parental and caregiver resilience and develop approaches that create access to concrete supports in times of need, that nurture social connection within and around the family unit, that encourage knowledge of parenting and child development, and that foster nurturing environments that build social and emotional competence of children. In 2022, working with the state’s network of Family Resource Centers and other family caregiving partners, we were able to: • Expand the Kinship Navigation Program. Families enrolled in the Kinship Navigation Program increased by 52% and received more than 4,900 hours of service. • Provide training and technical assistance for family strengthening professionals who work with families throughout the state. We held 64 trainings for 875 individuals and provided 270 hours of technical assistance to 547 family support professionals. PREVENTION comes through PARTNERSHIP and collaboration in the construction of positive futures that will keep children free from abuse and neglect. At the New Hampshire Children’s Trust, PRIMARY PREVENTION is what we do. And when we all do it together, research shows incidences of abuse and neglect drop significantly. In fact, New Hampshire data shows that most reports to DCYF are for incidences of neglect, born from economic challenges. Thankfully, there is something we can do about that. Every day, everywhere, Granite Staters are finding solutions to problems, so we don’t have to deal with them at all. It’s who we are. • Launched a Concrete Supports for NH Families project in partnership with the NH Charitable Foundation and the Family Resource Center Network, and distributed more than $590,000 to families for immediate economic relief. Children and families are the foundation of our communities, and when they are safe, strong, and supported, WE ALL BENEFIT. Your continued support and commitment are helping to create positive childhood experiences, which build healthy families and strong communities.
